Winter Storm Warning WINTER STORM WARNING  
Inyo County

Areas Affected: White Mountains of Inyo County
 
Alert Details:
* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations exceeding 2
feet above 8000 feet....1 to 2 feet above 7000 feet....and 8 to 16
inches down to 6000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph.

* WHERE...White and Inyo Mountains.

* WHEN...Until 10 PM PST Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Visibilities may drop below a quarter mile due to
falling and blowing snow. Travel could be very difficult to
impossible. Strong winds could cause tree damage.


* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel on Highway 168 especially through
Westgard Pass will be difficult to impossible at times. Snowfall
rates will likely decrease for a period from late-Monday night
into Tuesday morning, increasing again mid-day Tuesday.

Information:
Persons are urged to stay indoors until conditions improve. If you
must go outside, dress in layers. Several layers of clothes will
keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Cover exposed skin to
reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Gloves, a scarf, and a
hat will keep you from losing your body heat.

Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use
extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

Alert Details:
* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations exceeding 3
feet above 8000 feet...1.5 to 2.5 feet above 7000 feet...and 8 to
16 inches down to 6000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 70 mph.

* WHERE...Eastern Sierra Slopes.

* WHEN...Until 10 PM PST Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Visibilities may drop below a quarter mile due to
falling and blowing snow. Travel could be very difficult to
impossible. Strong winds could cause tree damage.


* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snowfall rates will likely decrease for a
period from late-Monday night into Tuesday morning, increasing

Areas Affected: Owens Valley - Death Valley National Park
 
Alert Details:
* WHAT...South winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.

* WHERE...Death Valley National Park and Owens Valley.

* WHEN...Now through 2 AM PST Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree
limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strongest winds are expected in the afternoon
and early evening ahead of a cold frontal passage. Winds will
gradually decrease overnight.

Information:
Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-
profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Areas Affected: Owens Valley
 
Alert Details:
* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6
inches, mainly north of Lone Pine. Winds could gust as high as 40
mph.

* WHERE...Owens Valley.

* WHEN...From Tuesday morning through late Tuesday night.

* IMPACTS...Slick and snow-covered roadways will quickly become
dangerous with numerous slide-offs and spin-outs possible.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snowfall is expected to develop by Tuesday
afternoon with snow levels hovering near the valley floor. Cooler
air will move in after dark with increasing snow intensity
expected, which will worsen roadway conditions.

Information:
Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely
necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden
changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the
motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your
destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially
cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is
winterized and in good working order.
